SEATTLE — The Revive I-5 project on southbound Interstate 5 in Seattle is entering its final stages after two summers of construction and lane reductions.

Crews finished their final weekend-long lane reduction on the interstate between I-90 and Spokane Street this weekend, marking the conclusion of “major work” on the project, according to the Washington Department of Transportation.

The major construction project began in May 2021. Since then, crews have resurfaced 1.25 miles of the freeway and replaced 63 expansion joints.

“We understand that traffic was tough this summer during weekend-long lane reductions, but we’re grateful to see this project coming to an end and excited for drivers to experience the improved roadway,” said WSDOT project engineer James Harper. “The freeway has held up well since it opened in the mid-1960s; this work will keep it in good condition.”

Crews also worked to clean up graffiti along the interstate during the numerous closures, using at least 600 gallons of paint.

A few weeks of overnight work remain before the project will officially be completed.

WSDOT says drivers should expect lane reductions on weeknights between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. while that work is completed in the upcoming weeks.
