AUBURN, Wash. — A 17-year-old was seriously injured and a man was arrested for vehicular assault after a collision Monday night in Auburn, officials said.

The accident happened near Auburn Riverside High School in the 500 block of Oravetz Road around 6 p.m.

A 40-year-old man ran a stop sign while texting and driving, hitting another car driven by Michael Salo, police said.

Salo, who is on the varsity football team at Auburn Riverside, was leaving a junior varsity game when he was hit.

The teenager suffered a serious head injury. He had emergency brain surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital on Monday night after suffering a brain bleed.

The man was originally arrested on suspicion of DUI but it was later changed to vehicular assault, according to Auburn police officials.

According to court documents the driver who police say caused the crash, Carlos Dominguez- Erives,  has two previous convictions for DUI.  He's also been convicted of negligent driving and speeding. He was booked into jail at the Regional Justice Center in Kent. He failed a field sobriety test. Police did a blood draw and are waiting for the results.

Police are investigating.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Salo and his family.
