CUSTER, Wash. — A man is dead after being shot multiple times by a suspect trying to stop him from driving drunk in Custer.
Around 10:27 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office answered a domestic violence call at a residence near 8300 Valley View Road in Custer.
While deputies were heading to the scene, they received another call reporting shots fired at the home.
When deputies and supporting agencies arrived, they found a 52-year-old man dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
Deputies said that a verbal argument between the victim and the 43-year-old suspect turned deadly after an altercation led to the shooting.
A witness told deputies that both men were intoxicated and that the suspect tried to stop the victim from driving drunk when the fight started and the shots were fired.
The suspect was taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center to be examined and was arrested after being cleared.
The suspect was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, second-degree domestic violence assault and fourth-degree domestic violence assault.
The shooting remains under an active investigation.
