ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A Washington man has died while kayaking in the Yakima River.
KIMA-TV reports the 60-year-old man had been attempting to get on shore where his wife was when the kayak capsized, sending him under water. Charles F. Lackey and his wife were about 12 miles south of Ellensburg on Tuesday when the kayak overturned.
Lackey's wife got back in her kayak and searched for her husband, but could not find him. Kittitas County authorities' were later able to locate Lackey, but life-saving attempts were unsuccessful.
Authorities say Lackey had a life jacket with him, but took it off when attempting to get on shore.
