SEATTLE — Seattle police and SWAT responded after a naked man stole a pickup and went on a destructive rampage in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood.
At about 12:30 a.m. Monday, officers were called to an initial report of a possibly impaired driver near Boren Avenue and Cherry Street.
As officers were responding to that incident, security from Swedish Hospital reported that someone driving a white pickup had somehow entered the secured parking garage in the 1100 block of Madison Street.
The truck, which had recently been reported as stolen, rammed an exit gate, hit a parked car on the street and then went back into the garage.
The driver of the stolen truck then hit two other vehicles inside the garage. Officers entered the garage and found the suspect driving erratically in circles and up and down the exit ramps.
Officers used spike strips to try to stop then truck, and though its tires were flattened, the driver kept going.
Eventually, the driver parked the truck and turned up the stereo. Officers said they could see the man was naked.
He then armed himself with a hammer and smashed out the windows of another vehicle inside the garage and then got into the vehicle, where he spray-painted the windows in an effort to hide, police said.
At some point, surveillance equipment in the garage was also damaged.
SWAT and police negotiators tried to talk with the man, but he ignored them.
Eventually, the man got back into the stolen truck and tried to flee, but SWAT officers used their vehicles to block it.
Officers were able to catch the man outside of the truck at 4 a.m. They used a stun gun to subdue him and placed him under arrest.
He was taken to the hospital and then later booked into the King County Jail.
Police believe the 33-year-old man was experiencing a drug-induced crisis.
He is being investigated for burglary, auto theft, possession of stolen property, malicious mischief, DUI and hit-and-run.
