Man released from prison suspected in assault on North Sound trail

EVERETT, Wash. — A man who was recently released from prison as a result of the coronavirus is suspected of assaulting a woman Friday on the Interurban Trail in Everett. Now the man is back behind bars.

It happened at about 7:15 p.m. in the 11200 block of the trail. The man allegedly came from behind and choked the woman. She was able to get free, and he ran off.

Investigators said 33-year-old Cory Matthew told them he had been using meth for the past two weeks and had not slept in seven days.

Matthews was released May 2 as part of the Department of Corrections Rapid Reentry program to reduce the spread of the coronavirus in the prison system.

He was supposed to be under house arrest and monitored by correctional specialists and an electronic device.
