SEATTLE — A grocery store cashier who was on his way to work was brutally beaten after being asked if “black lives matter,” according to the victim.

Moses Brundyy, 20, was walking to work at about 7 a.m. Saturday when he was approached by a stranger near the Ballard Market.

“He asked me how I feel about black lives matter,” he said. “I told him they do. I repeated black lives matter, and he basically got me on the ground within the first punch. He started beating me up and just continued with it, and I was knocked unconscious.”

The suspect, identified as Solomon Prince, was charged with felony assault. He was also charged with fourth-degree assault on the good Samaritan who intervened, according to police.

Documents reveal Prince was relentless and broke both wrists while beating the victim in the head repeatedly.

Oksana Peters said if good Samaritans didn’t jump in to help, her son might not be alive.

“I don’t know how one human being can be so angry and hurt another for no reason whatsoever,” she said in tears.

Brundyy works at QFC in Ballard and was halfway to work when he encountered the suspect, he said. Seattle police were able to make an arrest, which is a relief to Peters.

KIRO 7 learned Prince had no known criminal history. He apologized to police multiple times, believing he killed the victim, according to court records.

Prince remains in jail on a $300,000 bail.

“It’s unimaginable what would have happened if the suspect would have gotten away with it,” she explained.

Brundyy said he’s been surprised by the outpouring of support from the Ballard community. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help pay for medical expenses, which has raised more than $20,000 since Saturday.

Brundyy said he plans on returning to work at QFC once he recovers from his injuries.
