Mayor Durkan extends Seattle eviction moratorium through June 30

SEATTLE — Mayor Jenny Durkan announced Monday that Seattle is extending the eviction moratorium through June 30, 2021.

It was set to expire March 31. While the moratorium is in place, property owners cannot issue termination notices or initiate an eviction unless there is “an imminent threat to the health and safety of the community.”

The order also prevents tenants from getting late fees or interest due to late payment. It applies to residential, nonprofit and small business evictions.

“Seattle residents and businesses continue to feel the economic impact of this pandemic, and we will not successfully recover if we do not include the recovery needs of low-income communities and small businesses. Extending the eviction moratorium provides housing stability for our neighbors as new federal funding arrives,” Durkan said.

The extension comes a week after King County and Seattle received $23 million in rental assistance through the American Rescue Plan.

Durkan also extended other pandemic relief programs, including utility assistance.
