Miles-long backup on I-5 South near Tumwater after semitruck crashes into overpass, killing driver

TUMWATER, Wash. — All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 between Tumwater and Maytown were closed Monday morning after a semitruck crashed into an overpass, killing the driver.

The collision occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. at milepost 97 near 113th Avenue Southwest, according to the Washington Department of Transportation.

WSDOT crews are diverting traffic to the 93rd Avenue interchange while authorities respond to the scene.

The semitruck is also leaking diesel and the overpass will need to be inspected, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer.

The left lane of southbound I-5 reopened just before 10 a.m.

As of 12:15 p.m., two lanes of southbound I-5 were open and one remained closed.

WSDOT does not have an estimate for when all lanes will be reopened.

Drivers are advised to continue to avoid the area.

This is a developing story.
