Monroe man charged with hate crime after allegedly threatening, harassing high school student

MONROE, Wash. — A Monroe man has been charged with a hate crime after alleged harassment with racial bias toward a high school student, the Monroe Police Department said.

The charge was the result of a police department investigation into alleged racial bias and harassment at Monroe High School on Nov. 10.

In the incident, a white student made racial taunts toward a Black student, the department said. The students also allegedly pushed and shoved each other.

The father of the white student allegedly made death threats and racist remarks to the Black student over the phone, according to Monroe police.

The threats were record on another student’s phone and circulated on social media.

The investigation included reviewed video recordings and other digital evidence.

During the investigation, police learned of other acts of harassment made by the father and other teenage suspects, including showing up at the victim’s workplace, police said.

The man is scheduled to be arraigned in Snohomish County Superior Court on Jan. 19.
