Montlake Bridge closure to impact drivers, public transit routes, boat traffic

Study considers Montlake Cut bridge just for bikes and pedestrians

SEATTLE — Starting Monday, Seattle’s Montlake Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic for nearly a month as crews make repairs.

The closure is from Aug. 9 to Sept. 3.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation said during the closure, crews will start work on the bridge’s mechanical systems and key components that need to be replaced to ensure the bridge opens and closes as it is supposed to.

Crews will replace the worn 25-year-old center lock, which keeps each side of the bridge aligned.

Also during this work, crews will add extra support beams and remove and replace metal grid deck panels.

The sidewalks over the bridge will remain open for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge carries 60,000 vehicles per day and drivers will need to take different routes.

Drivers should expect to see backups on city streets near Montlake Blvd.
