Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus reported in Eastern Washington

EASTERN WASHINGTON — Mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus have been reported in Benton and Yakima counties, the Department of Health said.

While no cases in humans have been reported, the DOH says now is the time to be cautious.

Seven samples have been reported in the state so far this year. In Washington, the season for the virus starts as early as July and can last until October.

Most people who get infected with the virus don't get sick - only about 1 in 5 develop a symptoms that go away without medical intervention. About 1 in 150 get more severe symptoms.

Health officials still urge caution, and recommend using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing when outdoors and avoid “mosquito prime time” in the evenings.
