The mountains have seen plenty of sun, even a brief warmup. But now, we’re looking at a return to winter.
Snow briefly fell at Snoqualmie Summit. But it was mixed with a lot of freezing rain.
Now all eyes are looking up, hoping that the weather will bring some much-needed, new, fresh snow.
“I know we’ve got over a foot coming tonight, that’s what I heard,” said Jonah Cilley. “And I know it gets pretty nasty.”
Nasty enough, that Cilley wanted to get a head start back home to Ellensburg.
“Yeah, I was over visiting my parents,” Cilley said. “And I was trying to beat it back home.”
Many people who come to the Summit to play are looking forward to more snow. Snowfall has been a bit sparse for February.
“We decided we’d try to get up here before the storm so that we wouldn’t get stuck,” said Kathy Golic, of North Bend. “She’s got somewhere to be tonight. And we kind of have a trade-off because we’re going to try to come back tomorrow and do some loops with good snow.”
Good snow, and lots of it, is what they are hoping for at the Summit at Snoqualmie Ski Resort, too.
“Yeah, it’s been a while since we’ve had some snow,” said Karter Riach, the resort’s marketing and sales director. “So, we’re really excited to see it coming in.”
Riach said snow has fallen every week this winter. But it has amounted to only about a foot for the month of February, which is below normal.
So, they are hoping for more snow now — a “March Miracle.”
“March can be the biggest month of the season, sometimes, which is interesting,” Riach said. “But in the Cascades, it’s just how things go.”
And how they have been going has not been so great for every skier, especially those just trying it out for the first time.
“I mean as long as it’s not icy,” said Linsey Hansen, of Seattle. “So, if it’s a lot of snow and it ices over, no. But nice powdery snow, I think I’d like that.”
Fresh powder is something just about every skier wants. And from the way it looked, they’re going to get it.
