The Progressive Animal Welfare Society, PAWS, recently helped treat a Muskrat with salt toxicity and released it back into the wild.
PAWS said the female Muskrat was found swimming in circles in Lummi Bay -- near Bellingham.
Staff with PAWS’ Wildlife Center suspected she had salt toxicity based on blood work and clinical signs.
PAWS explained the muskrat most likely dispersed from a nearby lake and used the bay to travel to a new wetland.
"Young females from the last litter of 2018 are leaving their mothers' home ranges right now to find new territories. She may have ingested too much salt water during her search," PAWS said in a news release.
PAWS officials treated the muskrat with a salt toxicity treatment – a treatment that lowers sodium levels with fluid therapy.
Officials said the therapy was effective and the muskrat was released back into the wild earlier this week.
