SAN JUAN ISLANDS, Wash. — Endangered Southern Resident orcas have a new baby in the J Pod.
The Center for Whale Research confirmed spotting the new addition in the San Juan Islands this week.
Mom J37 was seen traveling in a tight group with her new baby and other family members.
The baby is believed to have been born within the last few days.
The sex of the new calf, which was designated J59, is not yet known. The Center for Whale Research said the baby appears to be in good condition.
J59 is the first calf born into the J Pod since September 2020, when J41 gave birth to J58, a female.
