New meditation, multi-sensory rooms coming to Sea-Tac Airport

SEATAC, Wash. — Passengers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will soon have a new peaceful place to land, even before they board their flight.

You may be surprised to learn the airport already has a meditation room where you can get away from the crowds. Some people choose to pray there.

It’s now being replaced with a new one after security, and next to it will be something called a “multi-sensory room.”

Miami International Airport already has one.

It’s a calm place where people with neurological or developmental disabilities can prepare for travel.

"The airport can be a bright, lively place, and so making sure the lighting is maybe a bit calmer -- a little dimmer. That the materials are inviting,” said Julie Collins with Sea-Tac.

The Port of Seattle consulted with parents of children with autism to ensure the new sensory room has special features like interesting textures and rocking chairs.

The new rooms are expected to open this fall, with signs directing travelers how to get there.
