SEATTLE — Rail passengers will finally be able to ride the Northgate Link light rail extension, as Sound Transit announced Friday that the train will be open for service on October 2.
Taking only 14 minutes to go from Northgate to downtown Seattle, the 4.3 mile extension will make stops at the new underground stations in the University District and Roosevelt neighborhoods.

With plans to open an extension every year through 2024, next on the horizon includes Tacoma in 2022, east King County in 2023 and Lynnwood and Federal Way in 2024.
The Northgate Link extension was approved in 2008 as part of the Sound Transit 2 ballot measure.
After six years of planning, construction began in 2012.
