OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK, Wash. — A hiker was rescued by an off-duty officer from Rialto Beach in Olympic National Park after getting stranded on rocks.
On Monday evening, off-duty Officer Morgan Cooney with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was near the beach when he heard sirens. Cooney called dispatch and learned that a hiker was stranded on rocks that were disappearing as the tide came in.
When Cooney arrived, a ranger was already trying to reach the woman with a rescue rope. Cooney put on his wet suit and went down to the beach to help the ranger.
He was able to swim out to the rock and get the woman off the rocks before she was swept away by the tide.
The woman survived with only minor injuries.
