Suspect killed, police officer injured in officer-involved shooting in Marysville

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Detectives with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) are investigating a “use of force” incident in Marysville after a suspect was killed and a police officer was injured during a routine traffic stop.

According to a public information officer (PIO) with SMART, the incident began around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7 near the Costco at the Twin Lakes Shopping Center in Marysville.

An officer with the Marysville Police Department conducted a routine traffic stop on the south side of the shopping center. An altercation began, and during the altercation, the female police officer was reportedly dragged by the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect then reportedly drove a short distance before crashing into the Costco building, and the car was engulfed in flames. Shots were then fired by a Marysville police officer.

The PIO confirmed that the suspect did die at the scene.

Public information officers would not confirm the cause of death, the identity of the suspect, or any demographics of the individual at this time, adding that the cause of death would be examined and determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The officer who was dragged sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, but she was released overnight.

As a precaution, businesses in the area did administer a lockdown for customers, though police say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, Arlington Police Department, and North County Fire.

Public information officers also would not confirm if the shots were fired by the female officer who was dragged or by another responding Marysville police officer, adding that the investigation was ongoing, “At this point, we’re still gathering information.”
