Officers were called at about 8:10 p.m. Saturday to the area of First Avenue and Yesler Way, as well as the 100 block of Marion Street for reports of gunfire and a man armed with a rifle.
Police responded and found the man in the 100 block of Marion Street standing outside his pickup, which he had crashed into the Federal Office Building, law enforcement said.
Police engaged with the man but officials said circumstances led to officers firing shots at the suspect.
Lifesaving measures were performed but the man died at the scene.
The Force Investigation Team was brought in to examine evidence and will investigate the shooting, along with representatives from the Office of Police Accountability and the Office of Inspector General.
The police department is expected to release video of the shooting within 72 hours, as per policy.
