KIRKLAND, Wash. — A man was pinned underneath a car after it came barreling through the wall of his apartment in Kirkland.
Police say the man’s wife and her friend were returning from getting a cup of coffee when the SUV crashed into the building in the 200 block of 5th Avenue.
The passenger’s husband was inside their unit, sitting on the couch, when the car rammed through the wall. He was pinned underneath.
Construction worker Uriel Lozano and some of his other buddies saw the crash and rushed to help.
"We tried to push the car out, to get it out because it was crushing the elderly man on the couch,” Lozano said. “We broke apart the sofa to try to pull out the man, but we just couldn't do it."
Firefighters arrived shortly after and pulled him out.
Lt. Rob Saloum with Kirkland Police says the man was alert and responsive. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
“If he'd been on the other end of the couch, it looks like he would have been much more severely injured the way vehicle was positioned,” Saloum explained. “So it was a very big blessing he was seated where he was when the car came through.”
A support post was also damaged. Six of the nine units are no longer safe to live. The Red Cross is helping those displaced.
Lozano is grateful no one was more seriously injured.
"I feel good that I was here to be able to help, but I feel bad that we couldn't get the man out,” Lozano said.
The driver, who is in her 60s to 70s, told them she was trying to put the car into park. But she may have accidentally pressed the gas.
The two women were transported to Evergreen Hospital with minor injuries.
