GIG HARBOR, Wash. — A woman was assaulted by another district parent following a girls’ basketball game at Gig Harbor High School earlier this month, and police say it may be connected to fallout from the suspension of three coaches.
According to a preliminary report from the Gig Harbor Police Department, a woman was leaving the game on Feb. 4 when she was shoulder-checked by someone she didn’t recognize.
The woman who shoulder-checked the other allegedly said, “I guess anonymous isn’t anonymous.”
This was apparently in reference to a letter that someone wrote to the Peninsula School District that resulted in three high school basketball coaches being placed on leave. It’s unclear what the letter exactly said, or if the woman who was assaulted was the one who actually sent it.
The victim followed the woman out of the building, demanding to know who she was. The woman refused to answer, and instead, came back into the school. She went into the bathroom and the victim followed suit, according to a preliminary police report.
As the victim took her phone out to take a picture of the person who assaulted her, the woman again acted aggressively and allegedly grabbed the victim’s head and pushed it into the bathroom wall, the report said.
The woman was not seriously injured and the suspect left the grounds before officers showed up.
The suspect and the victim are both parents in the district, a representative told the Tacoma News Tribune.
It’s unclear if the woman who allegedly initiated the exchange will face any charges.
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, the three high school girls’ basketball coaches were placed on administrative leave on Jan. 27 for the rest of the season, with district officials citing an internal investigation after they received a complaint against the coaches.
The district said the complaint did not have any student involvement.
