PUYALLUP, Wash. — Puyallup police arrested a 21-year-old driver suspected of driving under the influence on Sunday.
Police say the impaired driver allegedly collided with two cars on the 1600 block of Shaw Road just after 4:30 p.m. The road was shut down for nearly 5 hours.
Police say an impaired driver of a white car first sideswiped a Cadillac. The crash caused the Cadillac to spin around. A 62-year-old driver and 92-year-old passenger were inside.
Then, the white car continued down the hill and struck a silver car head-on. The 28-year-old driver was hurt and taken to the hospital.
“It happens pretty frequently,” said nearby resident Julie Armijo.
Armijo lives just a few feet away from where the accident happened on Shaw Road. It took her hours to get back into her home.
Unfortunately, she says it wasn’t a shock since crashes happen so often on her street.
“I’ve had several accidents here already. I’ve had at least 2 people who have gone through my fence as you can see. I’m missing part of my fence. I’ve had someone go through my mailbox. I’ve had people stuck in ditches, it’s a pretty common affair right here,” she explained.
Armijo says it’s a dangerous road with no street lights and drivers speeding in both directions all the time.
“It has gotten scarier over the years. As you could tell, there’s a dark road, there’s no street lights, even as we’re standing here you can see and hear how quickly the cars are going up and down the hill. It’s also a blind hill right up at the top here,” she explained.
The 21-year-old driver was arrested for vehicular assault.
There’s no word yet on the condition of the others involved.
