KIRKLAND, Wash. — Kirkland police are investigating an attempted carjacking and shooting that left a man injured Thursday night.
The incident happened after 6 p.m. in the 10700 block of Northeast 143rd Place.
Police said the victim was sitting in his car when he was approached by a person he didn’t know.
As the victim got out of his car, the suspect pointed a gun at him and ordered him to get back in and drive him to the park and ride, according to investigators.
Police said the victim locked himself in his car and then the suspect shot him in the arm.
The victim ran away from the car and saw the suspect flee near the intersection of Northeast Juanita Woodinville Drive and 108th Avenue Northeast.
The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police described the man as black, in his 40s, about 6 feet tall, with a slim build, slim face and neck. He was wearing a green hooded poncho/raincoat, which covered most of his body.
A responding medic unit believed they spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near Hellen Keller Elementary School, officials said. It was put on temporary lockdown as the school was having Parent’s Night.
A K-9 was used to track the suspect, but he could not be found.
“Because of the heavy police presence and diligent search last evening we do not believe that there is any immediate danger to the public at this time, and neighbors should feel free to return to their usual activities. We do encourage anyone that has information that could be helpful in finding the suspect to come forward and speak with our detectives,” said Chief Cherie Harris. “This includes sharing residential video footage, dash cam footage, and reporting any suspicious or abandoned vehicles in the neighborhood.”
Anyone who sees a person matching the suspect’s description is asked to the Kirkland Police Department’s tip line at 425-587-3515 or 911.
