Police issue warning after woman robbed at Light Rail station

SEATTLE — Seattle police are warning people to be alert around light rail stations after they said a woman was robbed and assaulted by a stranger while waiting for a train at the Othello station Sunday night.

The unidentified man snatched the woman's phone, according to police, and then kicked her in the leg after she confronted him. Seattle firefighters said they evaluated the 19-year-old woman's injury but she did not need to go to the hospital.

Investigators searched the area but did not find the suspect. At last check, no arrests have been made.

The warning comes as police tell KIRO 7 the number of robberies reported in south Seattle started creeping up last month, with 29 robberies reported then, compared to 21 in September 2018. Overall, numbers provided by the department show robberies have increased slightly in the south precinct so far this year compared to last year.

Despite that recent trend, the King County Sheriff's Office, which is handling the investigation into Sunday's robbery, said only two strong-arm robberies have been reported at light rail stations this year, compared to eight in 2018.
