Railroad torpedo explosives safely detonated in Puyallup

PUYALLUP, Wash. — Members of the Puyallup Police Department and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department assisted in safely disposing of railroad torpedo explosives Monday.

Officials responded around 11:30 a.m. to a house in the 700 block of West Pioneer to help with the disposal.

The items had been stored in a garage for many years and the homeowner called for help getting rid of the items.

A railroad torpedo is a safety device on tracks used by railroad companies to alert engineers.

Officials set up a radius around the house and set up a reverse 911 call warning residents of the loud explosive sound.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office used a controlled counter explosive to dispose of the railroad explosive Monday evening.

There is no danger to the public.
