Red light camera violation warning period extended at 3 Renton intersections

RENTON, Wash. — The Renton Police Department said it is extending a red light camera violation warning period at three intersections.

The extension comes after motorists were discovered running the red lights at an abnormally high rate at South Puget Drive and Talbot Road South, Park Avenue North and Logan Avenue North and Talbot Road South and South Grady Way, officials said Thursday.

The Police Department said cameras were installed at the intersections after receiving numerous complaints about red light runners and a higher than normal rate of accidents at South Puget Drive and Talbot Road South.

Because of a sizable number of warning violations since the red light cameras were installed, Renton city officials said they want to make sure the public has more time to become familiar with the intersections than the 30 days granted for grace periods.

“Once we started reviewing the warning videos, we were really surprised by the number of motorists running the lights," Renton Police Cmdr. Karlewicz said. "It was far worse than we expected. In the first three weeks of monitoring the warning violations, there were 2 1/2 times more violations at those three intersections as there was in the rest of the city in an entire month.”

“Our No. 1 goal is to make everyone safer,” Karlewicz said.

The city has extended the grace period for the warnings through June 13.

Dangerous Red Light Violation

Red Light Cameras Grace Period Extended The Renton Police Department is extending the red light violation warning period at three Renton intersections after discovering that motorists are running the red lights at an abnormally high rate. The intersections were equipped after the Renton Police Department received numerous complaints about red light runners at the intersections as well as a much higher than normal accident rate at South Puget Drive and Talbot Road South. The intersections are located at: • South Puget Drive and Talbot Road South • Park Avenue North and Logan Avenue North • Talbot Road South and South Grady Way The City of Renton normally grants a 30 day warning period when cameras are installed. However, due to the large number of warning violations so far, officials want to make sure the public has additional time to become familiar with the intersections and the danger that running red lights causes. Many serious and sometimes fatal accidents are the result of motorists failing to stop for red lights. Renton Police Commander Karlewicz said, “Once we started reviewing the warning videos we were really surprised by the number of motorists running the lights. It was far worse than we expected. In the first three weeks of monitoring the warning violations there were two and a half times more violations at those three intersections as there was in the rest of the city in an entire month.” Karlewicz added, “Our number one goal is to make everyone safer. We want to make sure everyone knows about these intersections and how dangerous they are and adjust their driving habits before they get to the point they are receiving citations.” The warning grace period at the three intersections has been extended two weeks and will run through June 13th. Here is an example of a motorist running the light at Grady and Talbot at a high rate of speed.
