Removal of Seattle’s Pier 58 to begin this weekend

SEATTLE — The removal of Pier 58, also known as Waterfront Park, is expected to begin this weekend, according to the city of Seattle.

Officials suddenly closed the pier last month for safety because of what they call “significant shifting.”

Engineers reportedly have observed increased movement and deterioration of the pier and critical work must be advanced over the weekend and the contractor plans to use appropriate protocols given the current smoky conditions.

According to a city release, the removal will be largely done waterside from a barge that arrived Sept. 4.

Much of the pier deck, piles and structures will be removed as necessary to ensure site safety, officials said.

The pier is expected to be completely removed by early 2021.

As for pedestrian access to businesses in the area, it is expected to be maintained during the removal.

After the pier is removed, a new park pier, which will include a playground, a public plaza and landscaping will be built.
