RENTON, Wash. — A Renton assistant principal remains on paid leave following an investigation into unwanted sexual communications.

District investigators concluded Rashaad Powell more likely than not sent explicit photos and messages to two students’ mothers. Powell has worked with the district since 2009.

Both women described his actions as harassment. The district launched its investigation after a student confronted Powell in March. The district placed Powell on administrative leave on April 3.

According to The Seattle Times, the district notified Powell in May that it would not renew his contract, but he remains on paid administrative leave until further notice as he challenges the decision.

But The Seattle Times reviewed documents from the Renton School District that offered Powell a settlement agreement to “better support (Powell’s) continued career in education.” The settlement included several months of paid leave and a neutral letter of recommendation for future employers, provided Powell resigns and agrees not to sue the district.

Powell declined to sign the settlement agreement “for a variety of reasons, such as the continuing legal action against the District,” his attorney told The Seattle Times.

Powell, who also coaches boys’ basketball, has criticized the investigation. He’s challenging the district’s May decision not to renew his contract.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
