RENTON, Wash. — A man who was shot by a Renton police officer died Thursday evening, police officials say.

The shooting happened near Southeast 168th Street and 116th Avenue Southeast at about 3:45 p.m.

Police say a sergeant said he saw a liquor violation near a convenience store.

Right after that someone called 911 and said they saw a man with a gun.

When the man was approached by police, they said he pulled a shotgun and that is when a sergeant fired one round. The suspect took off, dropping the weapon.

Police say the officer then used a less-lethal means of force but the suspect ignored commands to stop and then pulled a knife and moved towards the officer. Then the sergeant fired again.

One witness who heard the gunfire said, “There was actually some thoughts that the individual had already been shot while he was walking away. He was kind of staggering, in a manner, but it was hard to tell.”

The suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center but he died at the hospital.

No officers were injured.
