A man ran into a Renton downtown bar, charged at a random customer, and stabbed him Saturday night. The incident led Renton police to shoot and kill the man.

Police have identified the suspect as Mantry Norris, a 20-year-old man from Renton. They say the suspect called 911 himself and they even briefly talked with him before he ran into the Cheers Sports Bar and Grill to attack.

The surveillance video shows everything unfolding within a minute.

“There he is coming in, you can see he's armed with a large knife,” said Cmdr Dave Leibman with the Renton Police Department.

Another video angle shows him waving around the chef's knife.

"This guy came running in yelling and screaming obscenities," said Donald Chromy, the man who the suspect stabbed. KIRO7 first talked with him the day after the stabbing. "I just said take it easy, calm down, no one wants to hurt you," he said.

The suspect is in the bar for just 34 seconds before police follow him inside.

“The officer walks in at this point. And simultaneously, the suspect attacks our victim with the knife,” Leibman said. “He could see somebody was being stabbed and so there was really very little to no time to react,” he said.

“I tried to block him a couple of times but he got me,” Chromy said. “Straight down to the bone right here,” he said.

The officer opens fire - taking the suspect down.

You can hear the hysteria in cell phone video someone took that night.

“What? Oh my God!” a woman shouts. Then you hear seen gunshots.

People who say they are family members of Norris say he  was dealing with mental health issues.

Renton Police say they  first came to Cheers after somone called 911 to report people using drugs outside.

Now - they say it was the suspect who made the call.

“We have preliminary information that leads us to believe that the suspect was actually the one that had called 911 to report the dark colored vehicle with two people smoking crack in it,” Leibman said.

“As they approach the person outside who ended up being the suspect, the suspect made a comment to them - something to the effect of I'm going to kill people,” Leibman said. After that, the suspect ran inside with police behind him.

Police never found any people using drugs.

KIRO7’s Deedee Sun asked officers if they believe the suspect was trying to get himself killed.

“We’ve considered that scenario as a possibility, and as unfortunate as it is - it's not an uncommon occurrence across the U.S.,” Leibman said.

The victim in the stabbing said he believes the officer who opened fire  saved his life.

“If he (the officer) hadn't been there, that last swing could've went anywhere,” Chromy said.

But he is also thinking of the suspect and Norris’ family.

"I actually feel bad for the guy that was shot and killed,” Chromy said. “"Unfortunately we weren't able to stop him and get him the help he needs,” he said.

Renton police said Norris has no criminal history, but they did respond to a call in 2016 -- where he had some sort of altercation, and a witness described him as delusional.

After that incident, police say he was taken to Valley Medical Center for involuntary commitment.

The Valley Investigative Team is investigating the officer involved shooting.

The surveillance video contains graphic content and may be disturbing for some. Watch the video below. KIRO 7 is stopping the video before the man was shot.
