Sailor who died after fall from aircraft elevator of USS Nimitz name released

The name of the sailor who fell from one of the lowered aircraft elevators of the USS Nimitz has been released.

The Navy identified the sailor as Logistics Specialist seaman Juan Jose Garcia-Herrera, 21, a Chicago native.

Officials said Garcia-Herrera died from injuries he suffered in the fall.

The ship was in port at Naval Air Station North Island in California when Garcia-Herra died early Saturday after falling from one of the ship's lowered aircraft elevators after 9 p.m. Friday, a ship official said. The ship was there for routine training operations.

Ensign Bill Petkovski, the ship's deputy public affairs officer, said the seaman was taken to the University of California San Diego Regional Trauma Center for treatment but died at about 2 a.m.

Because of Navy policy, the sailor's name was not be released until 24 hours after the next-of-kin was notified.

Navy officials said the sailor's fall was an accident and it is not a common type of accident.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The Nimitz is one of the largest warships in the world and its home port is in Bremerton, Washington.
