Mobility group presenting plan to City Council to bring scooter sharing to Seattle

SEATTLE — A transportation mobility group is presenting a plan to the City Council on Tuesday to bring scooter sharing to the city.

The group, Micromobility Coalition, works to improve quality of life by promoting "access to personal transportation options that reduce traffic, create cleaner and quieter communities, and make it easier for people to get where they want to go."

The coalition is giving a 10-minute presentation to the Planning, Lane Use, and Zoning Committee during the committee's meeting at noon.

The share companies are trying to get support out to this meeting. A lot of people who use the Lime bikesharing app got messages telling them to show up to today's meeting at City Hall.

Mayor Jenny Durkan has said she supports scooters in Seattle but has said she will follow the Seattle process to getting them done.

Councilmember Mike O'Brien, a transit advocate, has said the same.

Bikeshare has been a success so far in Seattle. Last year there were more than 2 million trips. Share companies like Lime would like it to happen in 2019 ahead of the second Seattle Squeeze next year.

Several communities surrounding Seattle have approved e-scooter pilot programs, including Tacoma, Everett, Bothell and Redmond. Riders are also required to wear a helmet.
