RENTON, Wash. — It’s the story that is making national headlines.
On Monday, June 5, the Seahawks signed Austin Davis to compete with Trevone Boykin as a backup quarterback option behind Russell Wilson.
When Davis played for the Rams in 2014, he quarterbacked the team to a win over Seattle. Davis has as many wins against the Seahawks as Colin Kaepernick did.
“He’s a great kid,” Doug Baldwin, a Seahawks wide receiver, said. “I haven’t been able to spend too much time with him, but we’ll see how he does.”
Here’s what some football fans want to know: Why go with a career backup instead of a player who’s started four seasons in the NFL?
“He’s able to run [and is] able to get some throws out,” Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner said. “I really don’t know why he doesn’t have a job.”
“We know [Seahawks head coach] Pete [Carroll] and [general manager] John [Schneider] are going to overturn every stone, look for every advantage [and] look for every competitor to come in here,” Baldwin said. “And so, no, [I’m] not surprised at all when his [Davis] named popped up.”
Baldwin said it’s a just a matter of time before Kaepernick lands a job.
“They [NFL teams] are going to give every opportunity for the young guys to compete [and] show their talents,” Baldwin said. “And then whatever falls, you know, then he will get an opportunity once all of this dust settles.”
The only reaction from Kaepernick has been through social media. After the news broke, Kaepernick has been retweeting other people’s thoughts about the Seahawks decision to sign Davis.
