SEATTLE, Wash. — Seattle police are searching for a man who fatally stabbed a King County Metro bus driver near the University of Washington campus on Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified as 59-year-old Shawn Yim, was attacked while driving in the University District near University Way Northeast.
Police say Yim and the suspect were involved in an altercation before the suspect stabbed Yim multiple times in the chest.
Yim stumbled off the bus but succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The suspect, described as approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall and wearing a blue jacket, was last seen running northbound in an alley.
Despite efforts to locate him, including assistance from a King County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit, the suspect remains at large.
“This is a very dark and tragic day for our operator and his family,” said Elaine Porterfield with King County Metro.
In response to the incident, union members and city leaders gathered to call for increased safety measures.
Their demands include safety barriers between drivers and passengers, a regional task force to address safety concerns, and emergency funding for additional Metro police officers.
Seattle police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the bus and nearby areas as part of the ongoing investigation.
