Seattle Aquarium’s oldest sea otter dies

The Seattle Aquarium is mourning the loss of its matriarch sea otter, Lootas, who died this weekend.

Lootas, which means “Wave Eater” in the Haida language, was orphaned in Alaska after her mother died in a boating accident.

A release from the aquarium says that Lootas was integral in the breeding program and raised three otter pups.

Lootas was provided a humane passing by her caregivers Sunday morning at age 23.

The aquarium said that Lootas “never ceased to impress and delight staff, volunteers and members and visitors with her energy and tenacity. She will be deeply missed.”
