SEATTLE — UPDATE 10:45 A.M. — A man is in police custody days after UnitedHeathcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in New York City.
The manhunt is still on for the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan last week.
The FBI told CBS New York that while their search is primarily on the East Coast, they warn that he could be anywhere at this point, and they are putting extra patrols at the northern and southern borders just in case.
This all began when New York City Police say a man walked up behind Thompson and shot him, leaving him dead outside of his hotel.
Seattle FBI spokesperson Steve Bernd tells us this has been an extremely high-level case across the country.
“This case is getting a lot of attention because of how brazen the attack was,” Bernd said. Thompson’s private funeral is Monday, while the search for his masked killer continues.
“Even with how ubiquitous surveillance in NYC is with them being able to track his movements through cameras, he was still able to get away, he could’ve done anything,” Bernd said. Although Seattle is 2,500 miles away from New York City, agents here are joining in the search for the mystery killer.
“We have a national reach, now it’s not like a big department like the NYPD can’t handle big investigations, but the FBI’s jurisdiction is the entire country,” Bernd said. With this amount of time, authorities say they aren’t counting anyone or any place out. “With transportation these days a person could make it to any corner of the globe in hours,” Bernd said. “The person responsible for this crime could be about anywhere.”
Even if it does seem unlikely, Bernd said if you do see a person who looks like the suspect, call the FBI.
“The public is our eyes and ears out there, we can’t check on everyone at all times, so it’s the public tips that help with something like this,” Bernd said.
If you do see someone who may look like the suspect in the photos, the FBI said you can report that to them at 1-800-CALL-FBI or tips.fbi.gov.
