Seattle firefighters make grim discovery after fire in vacant building

SEATTLE — Firefighters discovered a dead person inside a vacant building in Seattle’s Mount Baker neighborhood after putting out a fire there Thursday morning.

The Seattle Fire Department received calls about a fire in an empty commercial building in the 3500 block of Rainier Avenue South at 8:52 a.m.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming out of the building’s windows. At 9:07 a.m., the fire was upgraded to 2 alarms to summon more resources.

Crews poured water on the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby homes and businesses.

Once the flames were under control, firefighters searched the building and found a dead person inside.

The fire was fully out by 9:51 a.m.

Seattle police and the King County Medical Examiner will investigate, according to the Seattle Fire Department.
