SEATTLE — Seattle Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena announced the launch of One Roof Foundation on Tuesday, a new organization centered on advancing equity and opportunity for vulnerable communities.
The foundation was created with the belief that the “well-being of every person is tied to the well-being of every other person, and that the future health of humanity is dependent on the future health of our planet.”
The foundation will focus on three primary areas: youth homelessness, youth access to hockey an environmental justice.
Youth homelessness will be tackled through a long-term partnership with YouthCare and will provide funding and job support. The foundation said more than 40,000 public school students are homeless or experiencing housing insecurity in Washington.
The foundation will also invest in programs and partnerships to ensure young people in the region will have access to hockey in the community and at the Kraken Training Center.
As for environmental justice, One Roof will help support communities disproportionately impacted by climate change an ensure their voices are heard.
“We believe that issues like homelessness, racism, and inequity of opportunity affect all of us, not just the targeted populations. We are all in this together – under One Roof,” said the Kraken’s Vice President of Community Engagement and Social Impact, Mari Horita, who will serve as One Roof’s executive director. “We know we have an incredible opportunity and obligation to be part of the positive change in our region, so that everyone feels seen and valued.”
“One of the most wonderful things about sport is the opportunity to give back and have an impact on your community. It has been one of the highlights of my career,” said Tod Leiweke, CEO of the Seattle Kraken. “The Kraken is an organization which has already prioritized social justice and One Roof Foundation will build on this to help marginalized youth realize their dreams both on and off the ice.”
If you want to immediately support the foundation, you can buy a special Kraken edition license plate. Of the proceeds from the plates, 75% will directly go to the foundation. Anyone with a valid Washington state registration can purchase them by following this link.
