SEATTLE — A mostly peaceful protest turned tense Monday evening in Seattle.
Hundreds of people gathered in Downtown Seattle for a protest over the death of George Floyd in the afternoon. That crowd made their way to the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
Monday marked a fourth night of protesting in the city.
For hours, protesters were peaceful. At one moment, some of the city's officers took a knee to show their solidarity with the protesters.
Just after 9 p.m., however, the protest escalated and the mood turned tense.
Seattle police said the incident commander at the demonstration in Capitol Hill declared the incident as a riot.
The crowd threw rocks, bottles and fireworks at officers and is attempting to breach barricades one block from the East Precinct, police said.
Before 11 p.m., the crowd made their way back to Downtown Seattle.
A curfew was in place for the city of Seattle from 6 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
