President of Seattle police union to resign following controversial social media post about Dallas

SEATTLE — Ron Smith, the President of the Seattle Police Officers' Guild, tells KIRO 7 that he is resigning, effective July 31.

Smith is resigning following a controversial social media post about the death of five police officers in Dallas.

KIRO 7 reached Smith by phone Tuesday night.

He said he did not want to become a distraction during a difficult time for law enforcement while the Seattle Police Department is still going through ongoing reform.

"My words have been taken out of context, for that I am very sorry, and we have to move on," Smith said.

The Seattle Police Officers’ Guild deleted its Facebook and Twitter accounts after the post.

The post read:

Dallas PD and their officers are in our thoughts and prayers…. The hatred of law enforcement by a minority movement is disgusting… Heads in swivels brothers and sisters…
