RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Slam wheelchair rugby team is gearing up for the national championships near Chicago.

KIRO 7 caught up with team members while they practiced Wednesday at the Renton Community Center.

Wheelchair rugby is an explosive, athletic sport.

Battle scars on the rugged chairs show the sport is high-impact as well.

“It’s not really a timid sport. There’s lots of noise, lots of action. It’s kind of like chess on wheels, said team member Brian Moore.

“It’s crazy. I love it. Because anyone watching can understand the athleticism in the sport,” said team member Cecelia Black.

This is the first time the Slam has made the nationals in five years.

The 16-team championships begin April 1 in Rockford, Illinois.
