Two Seattle bands are in the national spotlight this week.
Both Nirvana and Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson will receive Lifetime Achievement Grammy awards.
Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach, was released in 1989, but the band did not reach widespread popularity until two years later with the release of Nevermind. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and has been said to be one of the most influential bands of all time.
Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson are being honored for their work with Heart, which was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with more than 35 million records sold, several number 1 hits, and had “the longest span of top 10 albums on the Billboard charts by a female-led band,” according to the Recording Academy.
The Recording Academy made the announcement earlier this week.
The award is given to those who have made “outstanding creative contributions to the field of recording.”
Nirvana and Heart will be honored the night before the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4.
Past recipients include a wide variety of artists from Buddy Holly and Dolly Parton to the Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
