TUKWILA, Wash. — Amy Hunter brought her daughter, Kylie Hunter, to Westfield Southcenter on Saturday to shop for a prom dress.
They were at the front of the Windsor store when someone started shooting in the mall.
“It wasn’t just a one and done, but it was pop, pop, pop, pop,” Amy Hunter said Monday.
“Your instincts kick in. We didn’t say anything. We just turned and ran,” Kylie Hunter said.
They ran deep into the store and found a door into a back area of the mall.
“That momentary panic of every door we tried to get out was locked,” Amy Hunter said.
Eventually, they found their way upstairs onto the roof of a parking garage, where a worker was having lunch in his car.
“We squeezed into a little two-seater car that he had, and he drove us to our car,” Amy Hunter said.
After the shooting on Saturday, medics took two men to the hospital.
One has since been released, and the other is listed in satisfactory condition.
Tukwila police said the shooter likely knew the victims.
Police officials did not respond to KIRO 7 on Monday inquiring about the search for the shooter.
At the time of the gunfire, no one knew who was being targeted as they scrambled for safety.
Police responded from all over.
Twenty-seven state troopers secured the parking lot and blocked freeway exits.
The mall has seen shootings before.
In 2015, a teenager was shot in the hand at Southcenter after a brawl.
And in 2008, a 16-year-old was shot and killed in a confrontation.
