TACOMA, Wash. — Six people were injured in a stabbing at Foss High School during school hours on Thursday afternoon. Five of those injured are students, one of whom is the suspect.
The Tacoma Police Department said the suspect, who is a minor, faces five counts of first-degree assault.
Four of the students were seriously injured, but Tacoma Fire reports all are now stable.
Cell phone footage from inside the school shows a group fighting in the hallway while another person tries to break it up. People are seen kicking and body slamming each other and falling against walls and the ground.
Tacoma Public Schools said five students and an adult were injured during the incident.
“We responded, responded quickly, we were able to get the scene contained and get the students to their families,” Shelbie Boyd of the Tacoma Police Department said. “It is unfortunate. It shouldn’t be happening in our schools.”
Police surrounded the school and taped off the front entrance for hours while they worked to figure out exactly what happened.
A student told KIRO 7 he was in the front office during the incident and recalled panicked phone calls to administrators and the school being put under lockdown.
“How aggravated and scared everyone was, people were crying, it made me feel- I was scared for myself, even,” Brogan Avey, a senior, said.
Tacoma police said they are not yet ready to discuss what led up to the stabbing.
Tacoma Public Schools announced Friday’s classes and extracurriculars were canceled and would resume Monday with extra counselors on hand to help students work through what happened.
Students told KIRO 7 they do not want this shocking incident to define their community.
“Foss is a great school, and I just don’t want this to represent us,” Avey said.
Tacoma police said all the students involved are minors. All six people reportedly suffered knife wounds.
On Friday, authorities shared a safety message to concerned students and parents:
