EVERETT, Wash. — A man was burned and flames and smoke forced residents out of their homes in Everett early Friday.

Everett firefighters were called to an apartment building in the area of Hoyt Avenue and 36th Street at 2:30 a.m. for reports of a fire on the second floor.

A neighbor was awoken by the sound of breaking glass and saw flames coming from the window of the apartment where a fire alarm was sounding.

The neighbor notified the people who lived in the surrounding units to evacuate.

Firefighters arrived to find flames in the two-story garden-style apartment building. Crews quickly worked to contain and put out the fire and prevented it from spreading to adjacent apartments.

Everett Fire said a man in his 50s, who lives in the unit where the fire started, was able to get out but suffered first- and second-degree burns. He was first taken to an Everett hospital then later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.

Two apartments were damaged, one from the fire and the other from smoke and water.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
