Snow day: Seattle schools did remote learning, other districts took the day off

It was a snow day in most school districts.  And kids were clearly enjoying it. But some parents wish classes had been delayed, not canceled.

School was still on for students in the state’s largest district.  Seattle schools sent home computers with their students. And today they attended classes, remotely.

It was a different story in Kent. Schools were closed here in Kent for a third consecutive day.

And to be fair, they were closed just about everywhere, except in Seattle.

It may not look like what you’d expect on a school day, but on this snowy Wednesday, school happened in Seattle.

First grader Jordan Crystal and his sister, Aliza, a 4th grader, sat in class, from their West Seattle home.

“We’ve got two kiddos doing different classrooms,” said Laura Crystal, their parent. “But I’ve really been impressed today by how independent they’ve been.”

This was the Seattle School District’s answer to a snow day remote learning on computers the district sent home with students.

“I see it as a positive,” Crystal said. “I mean the kids are pretty focused at least right now. And I feel they are learning some pretty good technology skills through remote learning. "

It was a traditional snow day for kids in nearly every other school district in Western Washington, including here in Kent. It left parents and kids scrambling to find a way to fill what otherwise would be school time.

We told parents and Ukrainian pastor Andriy Matlak that Seattle students were learning remotely.

“Oh, well, we didn’t know about that in our school,” said Father Matlak. “So, we will try to ask our school about that.”

He was asked if he would like his children to get some kind of learning. “Of course, of course,” he said.

KIRO 7 checked with Seattle Schools to find out how the day went but never heard back.

As for the districts that closed, KIRO 7 checked with Renton and with the Kent School Districts.

A Kent spokeswoman emailed back that the district isn’t currently offering remote learning.  But at least one parent wishes they did.
