Washington Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell hosted a press conference Sunday on equal pay with soccer star Megan Rapinoe ahead of the Reign FC game.
The group discussed the need to pass federal legislation to close the gender pay gap. A bill proposed by Murray and co-sponored by Cantwell, the Paycheck Fairness Act, would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act and ensure all women are paid fairly.
Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards also joined.
Rapinoe has been a vocal proponent of securing equal pay for female soccer players after the U.S. women's national team won the World Cup, calling for FIFA to address pay inequity.
All 28 members of the women's national team filed a lawsuit against the United States Soccer Federation in March, accusing the organization of institutionalized gender discrimination."
