TACOMA, Wash. — Drivers in the South Sound will see a change this week along a busy stretch of I-5, as speed limits are increasing after having been lowered for months.
The News Tribune reports that posted speed limits along five miles of I-5 will increase from 50 to 60 mph by Friday as crews wrap up different phases on an ongoing construction project. The speed limit has been lowered since April along a stretch from South 56th Street in Tacoma to the Port of Tacoma Road in Fife.
The reduction was a reaction to numerous crashes along the highway, many involving semitrucks that caused backups for hours.
The construction is mostly complete except for a three-mile stretch that is still an active construction zone that will remain at 50 mph.
