State legislature passes bill designating Suciasaurus rex as state dinosaur

Washington is one step closer to adopting an official state dinosaur.

House Bill 1020, which names the Suciasaurus rex as the state dinosaur, passed the state legislature Wednesday and now heads to Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk for his signature.

The idea came about after the discovery of a 17-inch fossil found in 2012 at Sucia Island State Park in the San Juan Islands.

A fourth grade class in Parkland suggested the bill.

“The students in my district deserve to have their voices heard in government and, today, those voices were heard loud and clear,” said Rep. Melanie Morgan (D-Parkland), a supporter of the bill for the past four years. “Designating the Suciasaurus rex the state dinosaur has always been about civic engagement for our youth and their government. It is about giving them the opportunity to share their views and help shape the state they live in. Passing their Dino-mite bill shows that we value their opinions and their contributions to our communities.”
